The Big Green Picnic - Suggestion Box

We are encouraging you to submit your suggestions for the Big Green Picnic and to encourage Islanders of ages to contribute towards the Eco Island vision.

Here are just a few examples of proposals to help get the ball rolling...

• Organise an Island switch off day. Only run essential appliances, no TV, limit car use, restrict any unnecessary electric/gas consumption. Suggest it be in summer / autumn to encourage greater Island participation.
• Have a washing up station to cut down on the use of plastic / paper plates and litter.
• Investigate ( & implement) zero waste policy for the Island.
• Extend the Ventnor plastic bag-free project to the whole Island.
• Car pooling - encourage people to share cars going to work in Newport to cut down on traffic. Upload all relevant information onto a website so that all those involved can contact one another.
• Publicise 'freecycle' where people can recycle their belongings and give them to other people for free.
• Give every household on the island a free ' Hippo' to put in their cistern & save a litre of water each time they flush.
• Make better use of surplus garden produce: there are many examples of people selling/ giving surplus harvest at the roadside. A scheme where people could donate would be worthwhile.
